Israel-Palestine

Ali Nofal, top, harvests olives with his son at the barrier that divides
the village of Jayyous from the Israeli settlement of Zofim in the West Bank
of the Palestinian Occupied Territories, October 2003. Israel confiscated
the land where the settlement now sits and is in the process of trying to
confiscate more of Jayyous' land in order to expand the settlement by 1500
units. Although the settlers do not bother Nofal settler violence is a
common occurrence for Palestinian farmers. Like many other villages in the
West Bank Jayyous is facing the likelihood of being denied complete access
to more than 75% of it's land by Israel in order to build a buffer zone
between the separation barrier and Israel's border. Every three months the farmers of Jayyous have to reapply for temporary permits to get to their land and fear in the near future being completely denied access.

A farmer's donkey is searched by an Israeli soldier as the farmer
prepares to pass through a separation barrier at the end of the day in the
village of Jayyous in the West Bank of the Palestinian Occupied Territories,
October 2003.
